[Grml] problem gone -- can't get onto network

If your "ifconfig eth0 down" command worked, yes it should be gone
from "ifconfig -a" output.  What does /var/log/messages say about it?
That should explain what happened when you tried to take down the
interface.

I've no idea, other than "ifconfig eth0 down" failed.
