Thanks for your suggestion.

Older versions of xorg.conf.vmware did use X server's recognition
for resolution but this wasn't very elegant for monitors with
higher, not so common resolutions as you had to scroll using
VMware's scroll bar if the desktop inside VMware was bigger than the
non-fullscreen mode of VMware itself. So I did chose 1024x768 as the
default.  The xrandr extension never worked for me in VMware, so
I've to experiment with resolution stuff once again...
