[Grml] Alsa can't find mixer /dev/PCM

Huh - /dev/snd/pcm* should be correct for ALSA.

Please show 'lsmod | grep _pcm'.
Which xmms-version? Did you install any additional plugins?
Did you configure any special stuff in xmms?
Sound works outside xmms?
