Got the reply just now:

"Squeeze, Debian-ized kernel 2.6.32-24

I used the VMware blob, not a .deb package.  I know that I meet the system
requirements as stated on the VMware web site, but I can't say that I needed
any packages other than the development kernel headers and the tool chain.
I used the Squeeze gcc, v4.4.4 (now 4.4.5), and binutils 2.20.51.  dkms is
installed."
