I think the line you are referring to is:
[ -r $HOME/.Xmodmap ] && xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap || setxkbmap us

But this is correct as setxkbmap is only executed if xmodmap does not work.

OTOH there was a problem in .Xmodmap that prevented that altgr+o worked. This 
should be fixed in the mru/fix_xmodmap branch
