Ok. The good news is that I think we've tracked it down to just a
few possible left configuration variables now. I just did a build
with all those configurations set to a state which used to work on
kernel images grml.01 and grml.03.
So I personally expect that build grml.09 is working fine for you
and that we can further track down the problematic configuration to
a single config value.

BTW: It might be worth a try using the kernel bootoption 'memtest=0'
on a known-to-be-broken kernel image.
